Pre-production process.

We produced a 90 second short film to enter into the DepicT! competition. We distributed the product by uploading it onto YouTube and showed it to friends on social media.

There are multiple types of moving image media products like feature lengths, webisodes, animations, etc. There are also various different ways to distribute products, such as social media, cinema viewings, YouTube, GIF, etc.

When filming a moving image product the producer(s) will need a way to fund their creations, there are lots of ways to do this.  Commercial funding (ie ITV/C4 - commission others to make programmes - leading to smaller independent production companies arising) For example, "Come dine with me is a television programme that was originally started by ITV but was then taken over by a smaller company called "Shiver" and is now made because C4 pay the company Shiver for it.

corporate funding like BBC (TV license fee). And there are are also big multinationals like Sony who can afford the huge capital invesitment for Hollywood films)

including kickstarter (Kickstarter is a method of funding for film producers where you advertise your idea for your film and people will send money for you to create the film, you repay the funders by giving them perks,e.g. seats to the premiere, posters, etc.) or getting money from private individuals. Some people, fund their own films like Robert Rodriguez for example.
The money raised will be spent on equipment, actors, crew, editing software, security, PA (personal assistant), sound, transport, accommodation, insurance, props and whatever else is needed for your moving image production. A lot of this equipment can be bought or rented, depending on what you are looking for (actors are hired, not bought) actors can be hired from websites such as spotlight which contains thousands of actors from hollywood movie stars to local prodigy's for you to inquire for/to.

Here is a film created using funding from kick starter.
Wish I was here is about a struggling actor, father and husband finds himself at a major crossroads, which forces him to examine his life, his family and his career. And was funded completely by kickstarter.

Epic studios is a media studio with editing suites, live broadcasting areas, is a large venue for screening films, etc. whilst still catering for guests. This is the closest facility to us and it is in Norwich, These studios are full of expensive equipment that is needed to create a film from PC's to micrphones.

For our short film we were provided cameras, tripods, editing tools and sound recording devices by our college as it was for educational purposes but we provided actors, props, costumes and one location by ourselves, we then got sound effects from freesound.org which is a loyalty free sound website, the sound had to be loyalty free due to copyright and freesound is one of many sites that provide loyalty free sound. As we were using Gorleston beach and Daniels house we didn't need to get a location release because we were not causing any disruption or inconvenience to the public.

In a full Hollywood feature length production such as 'Batman Vs Superman' most producers will have a large crew made up of hundreds of people to help make the film from editors to camera men, script writers to security and so forth. Whereas a low budget short film can be made up of three people as we have done for our DepicT! entry because we don't need to make our film as professional. A TV programme such as 'The Flash' may need extra people depending on what it is, for example, the news programmes will need a visual mixer to decide when cameras will be switched,A transport captain will be needed if the programme needs to move location, etc.

In our short film we decided to let Daniel have the role of our cameraman as he has had no experience in acting but had Experience with camera work, Me and Faye took the acting roles as we needed two actors in our production, as for the roles of editor, script writer, storyboards, etc. We all took it in turns to do parts of each.

We had roughly four and a half weeks to create and finish our short film which includes filming, editing and pre-production work, it was a struggle to meet the deadline due to our location being further away than the other groups but I think that we managed to use our time effectively and we managed to finish our final product with a few minutes to spare. If you do not meet deadlines in the world of professional media there is a high chance that you will be fired for unreliability.

For our location we used Gorleston beach which is a 20 minute walk from the college, we used the beach because we decided that it would fit our story better than any other location due to the fact that the story featured a pirate, it was however an issue to get all of the equipment there and film within an hour and thirty minutes at a time so we had to film outside of lesson time. We also used Daniels house because we needed to film part of the production in a house with a tv screen and plenty of space and Daniels was the best house for it. We didn't need a location release for either location because we were not causing any disruption to the public in either location (A location release is a form stating that you have permission to film in the said place).
Me and Daniel biked down to the beach for our location recce and we already had photos that we could use for our recce of Daniels houlocation recce is a few images of the place you wish to use).

there are financial considerations such as copyright "Copyright protects the expression of ideas and information in material form, e.g. written down, recorded as an image or sound. It does not protect ideas and information themselves. In Australia, copyright applies automatically as soon as something is written down or recorded. Material does not have to be registered for copyright protection. It is good practice to include a copyright statement (the copyright symbol ©, the name of the copyright owner and the year of first publication, e.g. © Fred Jones 2010.) to remind people that the work is subject to copyright and who the copyright owner is." This affected us in the way that we couldn't just copy a media product that had already been made. You may also need insurance for staff, props, etc. Just in case there are any accidents, we were insured by our college as this was a film made for educational purposes.

  • Clearance: 'official authorization for something to proceed or take place.' for example, if I wanted to film in a police station I would need clearance from whoever was in charge of that police station to do so.
  • Public Liability Insurance:"covers the cost of legal action and compensation claims made against your business if a third party is injured or their property suffers damage whilst at your business premises or when you are working in their home, office or business property." for example if someone passing by is injured by a falling prop, this will protect you against the cost of court.
  • Completion guarantee/insurance:A completion guarantee (sometimes referred to as a completion bond) is a form of insurance offered by a completion guarantor company (in return for a percentage fee based on the budget) that is often used in independently financed films to guarantee that the producer will complete and deliver the film (based on an agreed script, cast and budget) to the distributor(s) thereby triggering the payment of minimum distribution guarantees to the producer (but received by the bank/investor who has cash flowed the guarantee (at a discount) to the producer to trigger production). If the product isn't finished, you will not have to pay back all of the money given to you.

Ofcom is the UK's communications regulator. they regulate the TV and radio sectors, fixed line telecoms and mobiles, plus the airwaves over which wireless devices operate.
Although BBC is mainly regulated by the BBC trust some aspects of the BBC are regulated by outside bodies. On competition policy the BBC is regulated by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT), the European Commission, and Ofcom. Ofcom also regulates some other aspects of the BBC, for example the BBC is covered by Ofcom's Fairness Code.
The BBFC is the UK's regulator of film and video, providing age ratings such as U, PG and 12A. they are a designated body so have legal powers to rate, and sometimes cut or even reject works. They also age rate some online material.

Our entry for DepicT! will not be affected by these regulators because it does not include bad language, indecency, etc. it is also regu;ated through youtube's 'flagging' system which allows viewers to know whether the video is suitable for children.

  • Trade unions: an organized association of workers in a trade, group of trades, or profession, formed to protect and further their rights and interests."TUC" has 51 unions representing 5.8 million workers There are trade unions for most professions from acting to banking. here is a link to a youtube video about the history of trade unions. A trade union provides help, support and representation to people who are employed by media companies.
  • Pact is the trade association representing the commercial interests of UK independent television, film, digital, children’s and animation media companies.
  • The Broadcasting, Entertainment, Cinematograph and Theatre Union (BECTU) is a trade union in the United Kingdom. It has around 25,000 members who work in broadcasting, film, theatre, entertainment, leisure and interactive media.
  • A trade association, also known as an industry trade group, business association, sector association or industry body, is an organization founded and funded by businesses that operate in a specific industry. ... Many associations are non-profit organizations governed by bylaws and directed by officers who are also members. A trade association is a group of companies, who all provide the same or similar services. The aim of the associaiton would be to represent the interests of that trade.

Evaluation/Textual analysis.

Our entry for the "DepicT!" competition is a ninety second short film featuring a pirate and an assassin.

We started the short film with an establishing shot of the beach so that the viewers know where the story is set and so that the viewers gain a greater understanding of  what is happening. We also had the assassin perch on the ledge to add effect.

We then move in to a close up of the assassin perched on the wall, looking across the beach, we used a low angle in this shot to show that the assassin was in power at this point and the grey sky's help to connote that something bad is about to happen because we associate darkness with evil.

We show the title using an over shoulder shot of our assassin on the left and the title that fades in on the right and then falls away, we added after effects to make the title fall and fade when we wanted it to.

The first time we see our pirate is in an over shoulder shot with our pirate facing forward and the assassin walking into the shot behind him. This is also the first time we have dialouge in our short film which had to be added with "ADR" (dubbed in) because the sound quality recorded on the beach was too poor to use in the final product so almost all audio used was added in editing.

We also show our pirate using low angles to indicate that he is also in power, from this the audience may be able to gather that there will be feud between the two characters especially as the sky was constantly dark, connotating that something bad will happen we also use close ups with the characters because in my opinion it indicates who the main characters are.

Pre-production for DepicT!

Initial idea.

Our initial idea was to have a comedic fight between a pirate and an assassin, which would end with an unexpected plot twist and an abrupt end that leaves the audience shocked.

Prop list.

Assassin/girl: hidden blade prop, plastic coffee cup, brown hooded cloak, white assassins cred cosplay.

Pirate/boy: pirate hook, butter knife, black leather pirate costume, skull and crossbone necklace.

other: dinghy with paddles, ps4 controllers, samsung tv.

All props and costumes were supplied by actors.

Production Diary.

12/10/16

Today we made progress on our storyboards, started and nearly finished our choreography of our fight scene, it was difficult to finish our storyboard without choreographing our scene because we did not know what it would look like.

13/10/16

Today we finished choreographing our fight scene and I have almost finished the story-boarding which I will finish in my own time, I had to know what was happening in the fight scene to do so. We did plan to scout the location but the weather was poor so we will reschedule that as well.

17/10/16

Today me and Daniel went for location scouting while Faye stayed and finished story-boarding, our script was somehow lost so we have also rewritten that, we should be ready for filming next lesson.

19/10/16

Today we continued filming that we started yesterday, we have got most of the shots that we need. Although, it began to rain so we had to return to the college where we began searching for music, texts and talked about adding small touches to our film.

21/10/16

Today we focused on our editing and sound, we used freesound.org to get a heartbeat and sword clashing sound effects.

02/11/16

Today we focused on editing and making the film longer but have now decided to add extra scenes as what we had filmed wasn't long enough and we started new storyboards.

4/11/16

Today we went outside for ADR we recorded our dialog and started to piece it together with the video, some worked and some we are still working on perfecting it.

Depict analysis

'Cool unicorn bruv' by Ninian Doff

This is a short, ninety second film submitted to 'DepicT! The film starts with a man trying to sell a bike but the sale is interrupted by a man walking his unicorn.

I like this short because it breaks reality in the way that everybody is fine with the fact there is a unicorn being walked around what I assume is London, a completely natural setting but then there is this hyper reality being, right in the middle of it. this adds an aspect of comedy to the film especially as the characters that the film is focused on are thug-like characters.

The camera is always steady, the continuity is very well done, depth of field works, good effects and props, has multiple match on actions, eye-line matches and in my opinion is perfect, I can't find any improvement for this.
