Public Service Broadcasting.
In 1926 BBC started broadcasting and in 1936 they began broadcasting on television. BBC is a form of public service broadcasting as they are a "public service rather than public exploitation. Channels such have public service regulations such as ITV, they must broadcast religious programmes weekly.
Commercial broadcasting.
Channels such as channel 4 are funded commercialy, meaning that they broadcast adverts between and during shows in order to pay the upkeep of their channel. This does not happen on BBC because it is funded by the TV license.
Corporate and Private Ownership.
Corporate companies are not owned by one individual person, whereas private companies are. Corporate companies can be commercial or Public Service Broadcasting such as the BBC. These companies have the rights to enter different contracts, can have law suits filed against them, etc. Privately owned companies however, do not have the right to enter other contracts and cannot share trade in anyway with other companies.
Global companies.
A company that as the title suggests, is global/ international. One example of this is Disney who own LucasArts, Pixar and more. Global companies such as Disney own the majority of the media. Having a global company increases profits substantially due to the increase in audience members and exploitation of smaller companies.
Concentration of ownership.
Most of the worlds media is owned by just a few extremely large companies which some people see as an issue as media today can be very biased, but for the companies, it means less competition.
Integration.
There are two types of integration, vertical and horizontal.
Vertical integration: When a main company owns other companies in each sector of the industry.
Horizontal integration: A single movie involved with the same level of production and sharing resources at that level.
Sources of funding.
The BBC are funded by the TV license fee, which is the annual payment for the television that every household must pay. The government set the price of the license fee and have made it law that you must have one.
Subscription services like the sky offer extra channels such as sports, movies, HD channels, etc. But the billpayer will have to pay an extra monthly subscription.
One-off payments, as the name suggests it is a one-off payment and film, series, DVD,etc is yours to keep for as long as you like.
Pay per view is a method that allows you to watch a show on a different network for example, a UFC fight pass allows you to watch a certain fight of your choice for a one time payment.
Sponsorship is the small clip that you see before a film starts and at the beginning and end of an ad break for example, "I'm a celebrity" is sponsored by Aunt Bessie, it doesn't count as an advert but it is very similar.
Advertising is when companies promote their products by paying for viewers (us) from channels such as ITV, Sky,etc.
Product placement is when a company pays a film company to place their product in the film or TV show which is why we see James Bond drinking so much Heineken in his films.
Private capital is just funded by yourself, friends and/or family.
Crowd funding is when strangers fund your film, to get crowd funding people post their film ideas and a potential budget on sites such as Kickstarter for people around the world. This is how "The Blair Witch project" was funded.
Development funding is when companies such as BFI lend money to film makers who they believe have great potential.
