Responding to a Brief

List 3 ways in which your proposed ESting meets the requirements of the brief.
I will make my Esting under ten seconds long, I will include the E4 logo at the end of my submission and I will include a soundtrack supplied by E4.

Did you need to make any changes to your ideas to fulfill the demands of the brief?
No, after discussion with my teacher it was agreed that my planned Esting is fit for purpose providing the violence is not too graphic.

Have you had to consider any legal or health and safety issues when planning?
Yes, I have permission to use E4's copyrighted music. I have completed pre-production paperwork, including a risk assessment.

How many people are in your team and what is/will be your role? I will be directing and using the camera while I have two of my classmates will be acting for me.

When is the pre-production, production and post-production deadline?
October 30th- November 22nd.

Single camera production diary.

1: We discussed changes to the script, possible locations, props, actors and ideas.

2: We made a shot list, risk assessment and discussed more changes and  locations as well as getting the first location recce.

3:We have almost completed act 1 on our shot lists and storyboard with the assumption that we can  not get the boxing ring.

4: We went location scouting and we were happy with our results, we are now 90% certain that we will be making the film a street fight rather than a boxing film. Here are the results from our recce:

5:We did the majority of our shot list and discussed possible ideas for audio during certain scenes.

6: We found some music and audio affects that we intend to use and I have completed my part of the shot list.

7: Today we started our storyboards and the rest of the group finished their shot list.

8: We have finished the majority of the Storyboards and all shot lists are now complete.

9: We refreshed our camera skills and thought about how we could apply them to our film, and we done a little bit more pre production.

10: Today I  helped another group with filming but have completely finished my storyboards.

11: Today we finished the montage and have begun editing the rest of the film.

Timeline.

Music video research

The final line of the song is not actually decided, there is debate over whether or not the last word is "Beth" or "best", People who believe that it is is best are referring to the belief that the song was written about Taylor Swift, others believe that Ed had an ex-girlfriend named Beth and that the song was dedicated to her.

I interpret the lyrics to be a story of when Ed and his significant other were at a dance (Prom, Party, etc.) and he was expressing his love for her , he thought she looked amazing and they were so happy together, I also think he may have been imagining their first dance at their wedding but is upset because it will never happen anymore.

Tenerife Sea is a slow love song, there are a lot of notes that are held for long periods of time, the instruments are played in a joyful but soft manner throughout the song, vocals and guitar are the main focus in terms of the music bu there is also piano (with effect) and bass. The song itself is four minutes long.

In terms of the video itself, for Tenerife Sea there is no official music video so I will look at his other music videos for inspiration. One music video that I believe would be very similar to Tenerife Sea is called "Thinking Out Loud"
It is about a couple wedding dance routine whereas the son is about how love will evolve with age and how he will always love her but will she feel the same. In Thinking Out Loud, the characters are in a suit and dress, it genuinely looks like a wedding but there are no guests, The venue is a great hall so there must have been a fairly large budget for all of the props and details implemented in the video. With Ed Sheeran's other videos he seems to follow one character through a day of their life, matching the lyrics with specific shots in the video and lip syncing on occasion an example of this is the video for his song "Perfect".

Research Dossier

Competition:
I chose to enter the BlueCat competition
Rules http://www.bluecatscreenplay.com/faq/#Submission

Annotation of a page of script. Note that the character's name in block capitals is called the CHARACTER CUE and the scene heading is called the SLUGLINE.

In this extract we can see that all four characters arguing and insulting each other, because of the kinds of insults they are using we know that they are from young children and they are likely immature, Jake however is clearly more intelligent and maybe older than the others because his insult is longer and uses more intellectual words.

This scene from Dr Who includes comedic dialog which is great for viewers at home but it also shows that Bill has great trust in The Doctor and that Nardole is fairly simple. This scene also kind of shows the relationship between the three characters.

The screen directions in this extract of Being human show A: that the characters are communicating without dialog. And B: it shows how the character thinks and feels without  telling the characters or the audience.

This ten minute short has very clever story telling techniques that lead us to believe that throughout the entire film we are following a possible terrorist, gang member, etc. by only telling us the bare minimum about why the two men are being chased by the military so we believe that what they are up to is illegal but in fact it is actually the opposite, the two men (although one doesn't know it) are actually delivering a heart to a dying military leader so that he may live and his corrupt general doesn't take over and potentially start a war, the militants that were chasing our protagonists were also corrupt and in turn trying to cause the military leader to die by destroying his replacement heart.

Vicky and Sam are a couple of teenagers who fall in love but they are also the fictional work of three scriptwriters who later on discover that they have the power to manipulate the world around them in any way they please. I like this narrative because it is very different and creative, we don't realise what is happening until halfway through the film when the young couple enter the same diner as the scriptwriters which makes the surprise that little bit better.

I plan on using this house as Chad's house if we create my film as it offers good space for filming and will fit well with my story.

I plan on asking the Kingfisher boxing club if I can film using their ring as the main boxing ring in my film as it is a professional style boxing ring  and local to me and the potential actors.

I plan on using this house as Tommy's house, it does not allow a lot of space for filming but I feel like this is the sort of house my character would live in.

Here are some ideas of casting that I have already thought of if my film is to be made.

Lochlan Morrison as Tommy's older brother.

 Luke Robbins as Chad

Luca Hawes as Tommy.

These are a few films that have influenced my film or That I have used as research.

Creed is a film that ties in with the Rocky films, The main character is The son of Rocky's friend and trainer, His son wants to follow in his footsteps  with the help of Rocky Balboa to train him for his fights.
What I took from this is the idea of a family fueled ambition to fight, I plan to have the younger brother in my script to gain his determination to fight from his brother getting beaten.

Never Back Down inspired me to have the two brothers, although it is brief in this film there is a scene where the family are at the dinner table and the younger brother of the two confesses that he got into a fight at school, the mother instantly blames the older brother who has a history with fighting both legally and illegally.

The most famous boxing film in the world that is Rocky inspired me to create a boxing film in the first place, it also gave me the idea of having a short training montage  in my film, I believe that most of the modern boxing films have been somehow inspired by Rocky.

Research:

During my film the story will include the use of a drug called melatonin which is a drug that causes drowziness and is often perscribed as a sleeping drug for people who struggle to doze off.

"Melatonin is POSSIBLY SAFE when used by mouth appropriately, long-term. Melatonin has been used safely for up to 2 years in some people. However, it can cause some side effects including headache, short-term feelings of depression, daytime sleepiness, dizzinessstomach cramps, and irritability."
-WebMD

Melatonin comes in the form of pills so they could easily be crushed up and added to a liquid, there is a debate as to whether the drug is safe or not which has not yet been settled as neither side of the argument have enough solid evidence.

Cheating in sport is very common, especially now that drugs have been developed that allow muscle growth, increased reflexes, decreased heart rates, etc. And many sportsmen and woman have been caught cheating, eventually people developed drug tests to show whether drugs were used or not. A lot of famous sporting celebrities have been caught out for cheating, the most famous being Lance Armstrong, he didn't use drugs but he was using a technique called "doping", this is where you extract blood a few days before your event and keep it in the right conditions so that the cells can survive, a short while before your event you inject the blood back into your body which means you will have the original white blood cells and the white blood cells that replaced them, this will temporarily increase the effectiveness of cardiovascular and respiratory systems meaning his endurance was increased.

Styles, Conventions and Techniques

In concert as live footage.

A music video that shows the band or artist performing live in front of multiple people or at a concert, etc. Which is beneficial because a lot of people are unable to see the band or artist in person so this is as close as they can get. One example of this is Superheros by The Script, the live performance is continuous throughout the song.We can see this is a live performance because the band are playing with their instruments in front of a large crowd.

Narrative and Interpretive.

A music video that Tells a story that links to the style, lyrics or melody of the song, it doesn't have to be literal but it has to have some resemblance. Jamie Lawson's Wasn't expecting that is a good example because It shows the story that the lyrics are telling but it shows it backwards.

Surrealist/Absurdist.

A surreal music video is one that has impossibilities and is unconventional, it doesn't have to share any similarities with the lyrics of the song.My example is Radioactive by Imagine Dragons, it shows an underground fight club for teddy bears that have been locked up and forced to fight or for challengers to use their teddies to fight for money.

Impressionist.

An impressionist music video is one that portrays the way the band or artist feels and/or sees the world rather than using the lyrics alone, however the lyrics and the video are not necessarily connected, these videos are seen as more artistic. My example of an impressionist music video is Scar by Lucy Rose, the song is about her struggling to decide if she should have a relationship while the video is of her doing fun things and being sad about it.

Intertextual.
This is when a music video references other media, this can be done in several ways, a parody would take all of the main aspects of the original music video and mock them. Synergy is when the video references an event from the news or other media, etc.

This is an example of a song that has elements of synergy and parody in it.

 These two images show synergy.
Whereas these two images show parody aspects.

Animation.
The video must have some animated effect in it.
My example of animation is the JCB song, you can see why

Lip-sync.
Lip syncing is when you mouth/mime the song, some bands/artists mime their own songs in their music video because it allows them to merge the music and the video without having to perform the song multiple times.
One example of this is Rude by MAGIC! at 0:37 a character other than the artists is lip syncing.

Editing.
Editing can make a lot of interesting music videos, because with the power of editing you can make the impossible appear to happen, it is helpful in lots of ways, you could slow down time, make people appear in locations that would be difficult to get to like space.
My example for editing is Somewhere over the Rainbow by Israel "IZ" because it is full of green-screen, slow motion and video over stills.

Cut to the beat.
Cutting to the beat is just as it sounds, the music video is edited in such a way that the changing of shots matches the beat of the music.
In the video of Believer by Imagine Dragons this type of edit is present throughout the entire video

Post production effects.
Post production effects are the effects that have been added in editing rather than while filming like a smoke machine or flashing lights.
The PPE in this music video, Seven nation army by The White Stripes is when the band are "growing" towards the viewer with the next band member growing, this loops as though trying to create an illusion..

Split-screen.
As it says in the name, split-screen is when the screen splits to show multiple different shots, the example I have used called "France" has the same actions and characters but in two different locations and they somewhat overlay with each other which I think is very creative.

Chroma key.
Chroma key is more commonly known as green-screen, where you edit the background to make it look like the characters or object in the foreground are in strange places.
In Earthquake by Labrinth they edit the background to make it look like the area is shifting and moving around.

UPDATES

Professional Presentation - the font for screenplays is always COURIER 12.

A Writer's Involvement in Production - unlike in the theatre where the writer is seen as a great artist, in film and tv production the attitude to the writer is much more varied.  Sometimes a writer will have lots of control as the film goes into production (for example Quentin Tarrantino who writes and directs his films, and Sylverster Stallone who wrote Rocky). But sometimes a writer will have nothing whatsoever to do with the production - a studio may buy the rights and then even completely change or rewrite the script, and there is nothing the writer can do about it.
